Marvelous Marcy: I met her at the Damned show on Valentine’s Day 2010 at Slim’s. I don’t know how I could have missed such a cool and talented gal who lived in the SF Mission District for so long (a tiny hamlet of hipsters). I knew she was a photographer of some renown: she shot legendary bands such as the Damned and even First Lady, Michelle Obama (oh, and did I mention, weddings?). Then we got busy with life and work and lost touch but always wanted to reconnect. She saw a Tweet about my work on the Sea Shepherd App and reached out. Little did I know that she was a lover of animals and was also trying to help save endangered cheetahs. It’s like a match made in heaven: two punk rock aficionados affiliated with the bridal industry finally bond over their work in animal conservation. A little random? Maybe. Very San Francisco? You betcha! I think I’ll send Evan Willams a thank you note, because Twitter, as much as it can drive me mental, has a tangible purpose beyond endless self promotion and marketing – it can bring people together…read on to check out one of the most ‘feel good all over honeymoons’ Cheetah Watch Safari Botswana….Stay tuned for more of Marcy Mendelson’s snaps in future posts!

Many couples want to do more than sit on a beach, they want adventure, they want to give back… and they want five star treatment.

I’ve been photographing the weddings and parties of free spirits and artists for many a year. As a recent development, I’ve entered the world of conservation, for the cheetah specifically.

Due to the generosity of planners & eco-lodges in South Africa and Botswana, I’ve been able to arrange a luxury safari focused on the cheetah at a priced at a nearly $4k discount. Not only that, a tax-deductable portion goes to Cheetah Conservation Botswana. We will be a small, focused group in beautiful, remote locations known for their wild cheetah!

Take the road less traveled: Cheetah Conservation Botswana

All my photography work goes toward the production of the cheetah conservation documentary. Special for the Anti-Brides out there: 15% off photo packages. Mention “Antibride Cheetah” in your request. http://marcymendelson.com

Join me, conservation photographer and National Geographic contributor, and famed safari guide and author, Peter Allison on a unique journey as we explore the best regions in Southern Africa and Botswana to see cheetah in the wild. Luxury accommodations in spectacular settings include all game drives in open vehicles with experienced game rangers on private land that allow off road access and the ability to follow animals at night. This is truly the trip of a lifetime.

About:

Marcy is a wedding, event, press & conservation photographer based in San Francisco, California. She has exhibited her work in London, San Francisco and Philadelphia, and recently at Scream Gallery as the recipient of the London Calling prize. As a photojournalist she has shot for The Times of London, documented the classic punk rockers, The Damned, and freelances with SIPA Press as an ongoing contributor with assignments as varied as NYC Fashion Week and the First Lady Michelle Obama.

Her fondness for the cheetah began as a young child reading her parents’ National Geographic magazines and fascinated by PBS nature specials. She was compelled to act when she recently learned about the continued decline in cheetah populations outpacing conservation programs. Special for Antibrides, she is offering 15% off photo packages with mention of “Antibride Cheetah”, and promoting her Cheetah Safari for Conservation.

And if you ask nicely, she’ll teach you how to samba..

The Dessy Group, a leading bridesmaid dress manufacturer for over 70 years, is pleased to introduce NEWLYMAID – a unique way to exchange a bridesmaid dress after the wedding for a new little black dress that can be worn for any occasion. Filling a void in the market, Newlymaid is the first service of its kind to offer women a way to enjoy savings, reduce their carbon footprint, help others in need, and get a fabulous dress they can wear for any occasion. With the Newlymaid service, women can turn their gently worn bridesmaid dresses into new ready-to-wear styles. Newlymaid will accept bridesmaid dresses and special occasion dresses from ANY designer brand. In return, Newmaid offers a special 30 – 50% credit value towards a new ‘any occasion’ dress. The dress styles, which sell between $150 to $250 at full price, range from a sophisticated office look to flirty looks fit for a night on the town.

How It Works

Upon visiting NewlyMaid, customers can request a complimentary return mailer to ship their old dress to NEWLYMAID. The mailer will include a prepaid return-shipping label for an easy return. Once NEWLYMAID receives the returned garment, it is inspected to make sure it meets the NEWLYMAID criteria: no pulls, tears or stains and all zippers and closures must be in good working order. If the dress qualifies, the customer will receive an email confirming that the dress is accepted and that special pricing has been ‘unlocked’ on her NEWLYMAID account. She can then visit NEWLYMAID to order her dress at the special price. The returned dresses will be either donated to charity or recycled. Dresses which are suitable for reuse will be donated to Clothes4Souls. Please visit clothes4souls.org to learn more about how the organization brings shoes and apparel to people in need around the world. NEWLYMAID will work with UNIFI, a global textile company, to recycle qualifying dresses that are 100% polyester. Future NEWLYMAID styles offered will include REPREVE (R)- recycled fibers made by Unifi. REPREVE is a registered trademark of Unifi, Inc. To learn more about Repreve visit: www.repreve.com. NEWLYMAID offers a way to swap “something old for something new” in a modern way with environmental benefits and charitable incentives. Visit www.newlymaid.com to get started!

Korbel California Champagne 2009 Brut – Made with Organically Grown Grapes

Vineyards

This special bottling of Korbel Brut is made from 100% organically grown grapes from some of the premier vineyards in California. These vineyards are farmed sustainably, and without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers. All farming practices are in compliance with the USDA’s organic certification program and are monitored by the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF).

The 2009 growing season gave us a modest yield, of very high quality grapes. The vines were still partially recovering from the frosts of 2008, which lead to a slightly lighter crop. Sometimes vines will respond to a lighter crop by putting a little extra character into the remaining grapes. This was clearly the case in 2009, with this cuvee showing off bright citrus fruit and generous crisp green apple flavors.

Winemaking

To make Korbel Brut – Made with Organically Grown Grapes, not only do we use organically grown grapes, we also certify the entire winery as an organic processor. Korbel’s traditional Méthode Champenoise process is well suited to the production of champagne made with organic grapes. We work with the CCOF to make sure that our winemaking practices are sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Winemaker Notes

Korbel Brut – Made with Organically Grown Grapes is created in the classic Korbel style, crisp, delicate and bright. We always strive to present the pure flavors of the grape in all of our champagnes. The organically grown grapes in this cuvee deliver well-integrated aromas and flavors of apple, pear and white peaches. The finish is medium dry, with a slight savory note at the end.

Carolyn Gerin is a serial entrepreneur and CEO of Top 100 Bridal Blog Antibride.com, creator of the bestselling 3-book Anti-Bride series published by Chronicle Books, and the first bridal blog to hit the iTunes Store: the Anti-Bride iPhone App. She also serves as Senior Editor of Destination I Do Magazine. Clarissa Nicosia, a fashion industry veteran with over 2000 fashion runway shows and trend presentations under her belt, has brought emerging eco designers and brands in beauty, kidswear, menswear, juniors, RTW, and couture to US consumers. She’s worked with Project Runway designers, Michael Kors, Valentino, Global Green USA, and served as a regional fashion coordinator at Nordstrom. In 2009, in a noisy San Francisco noodle shop, they noodled over how to marry Clarissa’s background in traditional retail and eco fashion with Carolyn’s agency background in art direction, publishing, product development, and technology. On a cocktail napkin, GreenGlamGo was born. They brought their concept to developers Luxus SF, applied for Nokia’s Open Screen Project Fund, and the rest is history. GreenGlamGo is a mobile site, smart phone application, and social platform that aggregates the most creative, under the radar, green, handmade, sustainable designers and retailers, bringing them to a wider audience with curated offerings, engaging content, and the ability for eco-fashionistas to shop ethically and stylishly.

As well, our new green Nokian baby, GreenGlamGo gets a green light on page 92.

Had I do do it all over again, I would take a page from Katie and Peters wedding (Page 82) the hippest, low fi Surfer/Farmer Santa Cruz wedding we’ve ever seen, beginning with a wedding parade and ending with a swim in the Pacific. Katie channels an ethereal Cali girl dressed in green and festooned in sunflowers, Peter, her dashing groom rocks the pinstriped shorts. If you’ve ever entertained the notion of skipping the big downtown shindig, this wedding offers a compelling argument for the great outdoors and hippie luxe style.

Sea Shepherd’s mission to defend ocean wildlife has always impressed me, they don’t talk, they do. Being from Washington, DC, and seeing activists picket the White House daily, I always wondered: what exactly are they achieving here? Are there any tangible results?

Fast forward a few years, I found myself working with the spectacular Destination I Do Magazine and created the Antibride.com platform and iPhone app with our friends and partners from Synappsis. A story idea about donating to a non-profit for your wedding in lieu of gifts began to take shape….

What started as a story pitch/potential wedding donation registry to the rock star Sea Shepherd Media Team March 09, evolved into a full fledged Sea Shepherd iPhone app that just hit the iTunes store today. Synappsis worked tirelessly on code, look and feel, creating features to aggregate community and even donate from your handset. The Sea Shepherd Media Team (with whom I was lucky enough to work with) listened, believed, and moved it forward. Today: the Sea Shepherd App is a reality. Big thanks to Traci Walter, Katia Carter, Gus Goodall and Simon Turner for their heads down approach to creating results that don’t happen by carrying a protest sign with a message on it. It has been an honor to work with you all….The Sea Shepherd app is free and available here. Readers, please download, circulate and promote this app to help the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society continue all the good work that they do.
I’ve had enough of the turkey and I’m ready to go green… this week I’ve fallen in love with one of the most artistic, picturesque and delectable vegetarian restaurants in the city.

Located in a converted warehouse in the heart of the historic Fort Mason in San Francisco, Greens restaurant is one of the city’s most noted gems for aesthetic distinction, with an outstanding seasonal menu to beat.

Sunlight through the fog vow exchange.

Created by nationally recognized Executive Chef Annie Somerville, her innovative menu is focused solely on vegetarian cuisine. Somerville has earned a reputation for her creative approach to vegetarian cooking; she teaches classes throughout the Bay Area and is also the author of Fields of Greens: New Vegetarian Recipes from the Celebrated Greens Restaurant (Bantam Books, 1993) and Everyday Greens (Simon & Schuster, 2003). Her ideas have been featured in many publications, including Gourmet, Food and Wine, Ladies Home Journal, and Vegetarian Times.

Listed as one of the Top 100 Bay Area Restaurants by the San Francisco Chronicle, Greens has a Michelin Guide recommendation and is recognized as one of America’s top restaurants by Zagat. Produce is selected from local organic farmers, alongside their very own Green Gulch Farm in Marin County to ensure the freshest and most delicious seasonal ingredients in their dishes.

Architechtural, urban, rustic and luxe...

Hey Anti-Brides:
So in response to a few friends of mine who lovingly say ‘I use social media as if I were in a witness protection program,’ or: ‘Babe, you aren’t tweeting enough!’ (not ‘tweeting enough???) but ultimately:

‘You just put an app in the iTunes store, aren’t you going to blog about it??’

Yup, I think it’s about that time, but I decided to wait until everyone was at happy hour to pop this little nugget up:

Tiny drum roll please: We officially launched the Anti-Bride App yesterday in the iTunes Store, and we are stoked!

Admittedly, I’m not entirely comfortable with self-aggrandizing, (I’ll tweet about anyone else before our app – chalk it up to Catholic school), but I am really happy that:

1. It’s finally finished
2. Apple let it in the store, even though it had too many categories
3. It’s Friday and almost wine-o-clock….

Basically, our app is the blog, downloaded to your iPhone: and it’s free!

Originally, the blog supported the Anti-Bride book series, but over time, I realized that there’s a whole lot of territory to cover outside of W-day (but is still tangential to the wedding world world). As Sr. Editor for Destination I Do Magazine, I love to write about things I think our readers would like to do, from an eat, stay and play perspective, so they can vet the best experiences for themselves. Money’s tight these days, so if someone else can test-drive your overseas adventure for you, all the better!

We love to cover vibrant people: designers, authors, bloggers, chefs, winemakers, musicians, and rabble-rousers. We are interested in trends, movements, and people who stand for something that matters: Katie Martin of Eco-Beautiful Weddings, Jennifer Stein at Destination I Do, Emily Anderson at Good with Style, or Brett Snyder at Cranky Flyer. They fly their flags in different sectors of the Blogosphere, but have distinct and engaging voices that we love…They are influencers and thought leaders because they believe in what they do, and have great ideas on how to do it.

From lifestyle, entertaining, ingenious inventions, sparkly brooches, killer shoes, to twangy guitar bands: its all here, and more…Maybe our blog/ app is not strictly all-wedding, all the time, but it’s a celebration of what we love, channeling our “lust for life,” (to quote Iggy…).

Running a blog is a blast: it’s your thumbprint – a snapshot of your point of view. It’s a great way to connect with like-minded compatriots who share your philosophy, and if you are lucky, sense of humor. It’s also a content beast that needs to be fed every day. Without our team of bloggers (world class experts with wildly successful social communities of their own) I’d be a mad woman. I love them, I rely on them, and I’d be lost at sea without them:

Jennifer Stein: Desto Diva

Brett Snyder: The Cranky Flier

Dorothy Polka: Polka Dot Bride

Melissa Comito Aakre: Heavy Petal

Jan: Astrogrrl

And there would be nothing to download if not for my dear friends, developers and co-pilots at Synappsis.

So if you are so inclined, you can download the app here.

Drop us a line and let us know what you think: bouquets, or brickbats, we’ll take it all! It’s our goal to improve it – we think of it as a grand experiment and adventure, warts and all.

But at the end of the day, we’re damned glad it’s out the door!

Happy Friday!

Campovida is a stunningly romantic, and newly opened wine country wedding venue. Located in Hopland, a small countryside town, which is between the border of Mendocino and Sonoma counties; Campovida offers thirteen acres of biodynamic certified organic gardens, and a working vineyard. Most ceremonies are held under a cathedral-like grape arbor with cocktail hour in the herb and butterfly gardens. Their wisteria arbor is complete with a working fountain, surrounded by white bouquet roses, tall cypress and valley oaks tress, and is where the reception can easily take place. Vineyards encircle the property and the sense of rustic romance is undeniable.

This is how Campovida describes their thoughts on welcoming weddings.
“Thoughtful times require a thoughtful place. We believe that a wedding should be designed as a rich experience, filled with conversations, connection, and time to build those deep and lasting memories. Campovida calls you to create lifelong promises with the importance and beauty of a wedding ritual. It is the beginning of your new journey together”.

With ten cozy guest rooms, pool, beautiful event center, and a wine tasting room on the property it’s ideal for an intimate destination wedding, and will undoubtedly evoke a bride and grooms vision of a quintessential wine country wedding.
